Six US Ports to be under Arab Control

(I keep asking myself, "What if a Democratic President had done this? What would the conservatives being saying right now?")

Chertoff defends Arab firm control of U.S. ports
Homeland Security director says government review provided ‘assurances’

WASHINGTON - Homeland Security Director Michael Chertoff on Sunday defended the government’s security review of an Arab company given permission to take over operations at six major U.S. ports.

“We have a very disciplined process, it’s a classified process, for reviewing any acquisition by a foreign company of assets that we consider relevant to national security,” Chertoff told Tim Russert on “Meet the Press.”

London-based Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co., was bought last week by Dubai Ports World, a state-owned business from the United Arab Emirates. Peninsular and Oriental runs major commercial operations in New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, New Orleans, Miami and Philadelphia.

I'm glad that you've picked this story up, given the importance of Cheneyquidick and all.

Perhaps if Democrats would focus on real issues lof Republican failures like this, rather than inane cospiracy theories, conservatives like me would trust them enough with national security to feel comfortable handing over the reigns of power or at least letting gridlock happen.

BTW, commentators from Rush to Limbaugh have criticized this. I don't know about Hewitt. If he removed his lips from Bush's rump to criticize the move, I'd say the Second Coming is nigh.

This, of course, is far more important that the fact that we have a VP who can't shoot straight. It seems to be a part of the whole "let's sell the country to the highest bidder, damn the future" mentality that has seized the short sighted folks we have in power.

Clinton was no better. NAFTA was a big mistake and my brother and sisters in the AFL-CIO moved heaven and earth to try to get him to see this.
